Importance of Visarjan
The immersion of the Ganapathi in water is known as visarjan. This practice is particularly prevalent in the worship of Lord Ganapathi . Lord Ganapathi is invoked in a murthi, and puja is performed. The Almighty is realized through the five senses. Adoration to the deity’s beautiful form, the sweet scents of the flowers with which puja is performed, by touching the murthi in obeisance with our hands, partaking the prasad offered to the deity and listening to the slouches and mantras for the deity. At the conclusion of the 3, 5, 7 or 11 days of worship, the Ganapathi murthi is immersed in water ceremoniously and is re-invoked the following year. This practice serves as a reminder to the devotee about the transitory nature of life.
History of POP
For hundreds of years now, we have been celebrating this occasion every year. But when and how did the clay idol become a P-O-P (Plaster Of Paris) idol?
We already know everything that’s wrong with POP. But knowing all this how we started using POP was the question raised with us so we started to explore, then we found some reason why ganapathi idol makers started to make POP ganapathi and why devotees started using POP idols.
Over the decades, the festival has become a popular religious event that is a mark of Indian culture and fervour. With its growing popularity, the festival is now a major economic event. It became a platform for many artists and sculptors as an opportunity to earn their bread and butter. It’s some time during this rapid commercialization of the festival the transition to Plaster Of Paris happened.
Plaster of paris is cheap, easily available, which adds visual appeal to the idols. Idols made from POP have a better finish and more stable. They can be painted using vibrant colors. Hence, POP caught on and became a range mean while we forgot it doesn’t dissolve in the water, it reduce the oxygen levels harming aquatic life, increases the acidity of the water and affects our environment. It’s time to realize that just as it is important to worship god, it is equally important for us to protect the beautiful environment he has gifted us with :)
"Let's STOP using POP Ganapathi. SWITCH to Garden Ganapathi and let's begin the change."
